Frequently Asked Questions:

Q:  How do I get to Chiang Khong from Bangkok? (See Getting there) for specific details.

A: The only way to get to Chiang Khong is by road.

  • By Plane: – Nok, Air Asia and Thai Smile have several flights a day to Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai departing from Don Muang Airport north of Bangkok. Once in Chiang Rai you can get a bus or a van for the 2 hour trip to Chiang Khong, or 5 hours from Chiang Mai
  • By Train: – Overnight trains depart Hua Lamphong Station in Bangkok several times a day for Chiang Mai, as far north as the railway goes. Best to book as can often be full. Can get a 1st, 2nd or 3rd class ticket. Spend a few days in beautiful Chiang Mai and can then get a van or a bus to Chiang Khong
  • By Bus: – You can catch a bus to Chiang Khong direct from Mor Chit bus station in Bangkok, but most tourists want to spend a few days in Chiang Mai and/or Chiang Rai first, where they can soak up the more relaxed Lanna style hospitality.
