This Delaporte one day mountain biking and kayaking river adventure to Ban Keng Kaen and Pak Ou Caves is not to be missed by adrenalin or adventure junkies.
It’s an ideal introduction to mountain biking along jungle trails and kayaking down the Mekong River in Laos.
Soak up the sun and fresh air and enjoy the scenery as you ride through the mountains then kayak back to Luang Prabang, stopping off at the Pak Ou Caves on the way.
You’ll meet your guide outside the Luang Prabang Post Office at 0800, who’ll brief you on the day’s plan along with any safety procedures while using your mountain bike and equipment.
We’ll mount up for a short cycle to the port where we cross the Mekong River on the ferry to Ban Xiengmaen, before setting out on the Pathet Lao Trail through the mountains to Ban Keng Kaen. On the way we’ll ford some rivers, visit Hmong and Khmu villages, and stop for refreshments and photo ops.
On arrival at Ban Keng Kaen the kayaks and the support boat will be waiting and then it’s an exhilarating kayak ride 7 kms down river to the restaurant for lunch, where the Nam Ou River flows into the Mekong at Pak Ou, where you’ll see the sheer cliffs that drop over 300m into the Nam Ou River.
After lunch we’ll cross to the other side of the Mekong to the Pak Ou Caves home of over 1,000 Buddha images nestled deep inside a limestone cave, where we’ll stop for 40 minutes for you to take a look. (Your entry fee is included in the tour price), then set off again.
Back in the kayaks and a few more clicks downstream, we’ll stop for refreshments at a Buddhist temple on an island called Wat Don Koun (Good Luck Island Temple), before arriving at Kok Chong port late afternoon.
One of the most respected holy sites in Lao; Pak Ou Caves have a history dating back thousands of years.
There a waiting tuk-tuk will whisk you back to Luang Prabang and drop you off outside the central Post Office at the crossroads in Chao Fa Ngum Road opposite the new Azerai Hotel.
This fabulous ~ 60 km mountain bike and kayaking adventure is a trip of a lifetime, don’t miss it. It won’t last long, as many dams are planned and this magnificent river wilderness will soon be inundated.
Restaurant lunch included along with snacks and bottled water.
